Fresh figs with honey

It’s grey outside and all of the sudden long summer evenings and colorful fruit salads seem like an eternity ago. This feeling overcomes me pretty much every year at the end of the summer when rainy Dutch weather kicks in. But what also happens around this time is the nice surprise of fresh figs in the supermarket. O yeah, I almost forgot about those! Every year fresh figs fill me up with enthusiasm for the new season. Autumn, bring it on…

Because figs are so incredibly delicious, all by itself, they don’t need much work. In fact, you can transform these figs into a luscious appetizer in less then 5 minutes, simply by serving them like blooming flowers. One of my favorite super easy tricks that really give a wow-effect. You can also serve them as a dessert with some blue cheese. By the way, don’t bother peeling them, you can eat them whole.

Where oh where?

Dutch climate doesn’t really allow for large-scale cultivation of figs. They are mostly imported from Southern Europe. Around July they start rolling in from Italy, Turkey, France and Greece. Let’s hope they bring some sunshine along!

Recipe honey drizzled fresh figs

Ingredients (2 persons)

6 fresh figs
1 tablespoon honey
Parma ham or blue cheese (optional)
sturdy wooden board or pretty plate

Instructions

Wash the figs and remove the stems. Cut them crosswise with a sharp knife, making sure you don’t cut them completely in half. Squeeze with your fingers at the bottom of the fruit until it opens like a flower. This way, the figs stay upright when your place them on your wooden board. Drizzle with honey and serve with Parma ham or blue cheese.
