Dutch anise milk

Anise milk recipe

Drifting off to childhood memories… That is what a warm mug of anise milk does to me. When I was little, during the wintertime, before going to sleep. What else could you wish for during stormy weather?

Anise… Anise…

Anise milk is an old fashioned Dutch drink made from warm milk, anise seeds and sugar. You can make it yourself or buy it in tablets. I found these white crumbly beauties at De Aanzet, my favorite organic store in Amsterdam. But you can also buy a yellow box of anise powder (De Ruijter, Dutch brand since 1860) in the supermarket. Spoil yourself next time you stroll through the isles. Not a big fan of sugar? Put some bruised anise seeds in a tea egg or bag and let it boil with the milk.

Bring the milk to a boil in a saucepan. Crumble the piece of anise cube in a sturdy mug, pour the boiling milk over it and stir.
Prefer a sugarless version? Put the crushed anise seeds in a tea egg or bag and let it boil with the milk.
